Kalimba Collision uses motors to play on a traditional Kalimba. Kalimba is an African instrument that is often given as a gift to friends because of its simplicity in structure. The instrument can be played with the thumb and is very handy. The structure is made of wood in order to do justice to the aesthetics of the Kalimba and to give it a pleasant feel. The instrument uses solenoids to make the Kalimba sound and produces tones with short and sharp percussive qualities, similar to the flickering of window grilles. In addition to playing single notes, the Kalimba is equipped with a direct current motor, which strokes the instrument and contributes to the rhythmic patterns of the magnets. Kalimba Collision is also interactive, with knobs and buttons that let one change the speed of magnets and DC motors when they hit the instrument. Documentation of design process: tumblr
